The Three Roll Mill is a key soap refining machine used in industrial soap manufacturing to improve soap homogeneity, consistency and refining quality. Soap roll mills process soap between three cooled rolls, producing refined soap flakes for high-quality soap finishing and further processing.
Soap Roll Mill
The Three Roll Mill is a refining machine used in industrial soap manufacturing to improve the homogeneity and consistency of soap. It is normally installed in the soap finishing line when a higher level of refining is required. A soap roll mill consists of three rolls rotating at different speeds. The soap passes between the rolls and is subjected to mechanical refining, producing a thin layer of refined soap. The rolls are cooled with water supplied by a chiller to control the temperature of the soap during processing.
Three Roll Mill for Soap Refining
The main function of the soap roll mill is to refine the soap and break down hard or dry particles that may remain inside the soap mass. This is particularly important when using vegetable soap noodles containing dry specks. These particles can be difficult to eliminate using a conventional refining plodder alone, while the three-roll mill provides an additional mechanical refining action. The three rolls rotate at different speeds, creating the mechanical shear required to work the soap between the rolls. The milled soap forms a thin ribbon or sheet before being removed from the final roll.
Roll Mill Gap
One of the most important operating parameters of a soap roll mill is the gap between the last two rolls. For standard soap, a gap of approximately 0.15 mm is indicated as a typical value. Changing the gap influences the operating conditions and production rate of the roll mill. The correct adjustment of the roll gap is therefore important for obtaining the required refining effect while maintaining the desired production rate.
Cooling System
The mechanical action of the rolls increases the temperature of the soap. For this reason, the rolls are water cooled, normally using chilled water. The cooling system helps control soap temperature during refining and prevents excessive heating that could negatively affect the production rate.
Soap Roll Mill and Synthetic Soap
Depending on the soap formulation, a Three Roll Mill can be used instead of a refining plodder, particularly in the manufacturing of synthetic soap. The choice between a roll mill and a refining plodder depends on the formulation and the refining requirements of the finished soap. In some soap finishing lines, both machines can also be used to obtain additional refining stages.
Soap Flakes
The milled soap leaving the roll mill is commonly called soap flakes. The three-roll system produces a thin layer of soap that is removed from the roll surface and collected as flakes. These soap flakes can then continue through the subsequent stages of the soap finishing line.
Three Roll Mill in a Soap Finishing Line
The Three Roll Mill is one of the machines that can be used to increase the number of refining stages in a soap finishing line. For example, a finishing line can combine a Simplex Refiner Plodder, Three Roll Mill and Duplex Vacuum Plodder when additional refining is required. This type of configuration is used for soap formulations that require a higher degree of refining, like cosmetic soap. In other configurations, the Three Roll Mill can be used instead of a Simplex Refiner Plodder, depending on the type of soap and the required refining performance.
Evolution of Soap Roll Mills
In the past, four-roll and five-roll mills were also used in soap manufacturing. These configurations have largely disappeared in recent decades, with the three-roll mill becoming the standard configuration for this type of soap refining application.
